Year 6 Curriculum

Year 6 Curriculum Welcome to the Year 6 curriculum page! Hope you all had a lovely half term and are looking forward to the next half term. For this half term until Christmas, Year 6 will be covering the following units of work in their lessons: Maths: In maths we will be looking at mental maths methods as well as continuing with addition and subtraction, shape and measurement. We will be learning long multiplication and division methods in maths as well as doing problem solving in groups! English: Our fiction unit this half term is stories with historical settings, where children will read different stories set in Victorian times and learn how to write their own. We will also be looking at how to write biographies and autobiographies starting with Queen Victoria. Science: In science our unit this half term is Light. We will be focusing on the question ‘How do we see things?’ and trying to answer this. We will look at reflection and refraction of light and will be conducting some investigations in to light. History: Our topic this term is the Victorians. Some of the things we will be learning about are Queen Victoria, children at work and school, the Industrial Revolution, toys and what Victorian Christmas was like. Computing: This half term we will be continuing with our work on smartphones and tablets researching, marketing and developing our own apps. PE: Our PE session is on Friday mornings. This half term we will be doing gymnastics and fitness in the school hall. Art/DT: The children will be researching William Morris and creating their own art work based on his style. French: Children will be learning to construct sentences in French. RE: Children will be looking at Christmas this half term and what it means to different people. Homework is sent out on a Monday and due in the Friday of the following week. Children to complete all their homework in their learning logs, many tasks will be research tasks based on our history, geography, science and art work. This half term children will also receive a piece of Grammar and maths homework each week. Spellings will be given out each Monday and we will have a spelling test on each Friday. Spellings will be sent home in the reading records, so that children can practice at home too. Reading is very important and we read every day in year 6. Reading books will be changed once the children have read their books and had them, signed by a parent/carer or a teacher. Children therefore need to bring their reading book and reading record book in to school every day. We also have a reading corner in our classroom where there will be books children can read linked to our topics. Thank you for taking the time to read the curriculum page for year 6. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask myself or one of the other year 6 staff. Mrs West
