Year 6 Curriculum

Year 6 Curriculum

Welcome to the Year 6 curriculum page! Hope you all had a lovely summer and are looking forward to the new term. My name is Mrs Shires and I am the teacher now in year 6. We also have Mrs Monks to help me in year 6 and of course our Pastoral officer Mrs O’Boyle, both in her role as parent liaison and HLTA to supports us during this most exciting year.

Maths: In maths we will be starting with place value, then looking at mental addition and subtraction, shape and money. We will be learning different multiplication and division methods in maths as well as doing problem solving in groups!

English: Our fiction unit this half term is stories from other cultures, where children will read different stories based in India and learn how to write their own. We will also be looking at how to write explanations starting with ‘why aliens travel in spaceships’.

Science: In science our unit this half term is Evolution and Inheritance. We will be looking at Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and how animals and humans inherit characteristics. We will also look at dinosaurs and how they became extinct.

History: Our topic this term is the Indus Valley. Some of the things we will be learning about are when it became a civilisation, where it is and we will be answering the question ‘could you live in the Indus Valley?’

Computing: The first unit will be ‘we are app planners’ where children will research different apps that you can use on smartphones and tablets.

PE: Our PE session is on Thursday afternoons. This half term we will be doing different ball games outside whilst the weather is nice, starting with football.

Art/DT: The children will be creating their own Indus Valley people made of clay.

French: Children will be learning about places around school and places you will find in the town.

RE: Children will be looking at Inspirational people this half term.

Homework is sent out on a Monday and due in the Friday of the following week. Children to complete all their homework in their learning logs, many tasks will be research tasks based on our history and geography work.

Spellings will be given out each Monday and we will have a spelling test on each Friday. Spellings will be sent home in the home-school contact book, so that children can practice at home too.

Reading is very important and we read every day in year 6. Reading books will be changed once the children have read their books and had them, signed by a parent/carer or a teacher. Children therefore need to bring their reading book and home-school contact book in to school every day. We also have a reading corner in our classroom where there will be books children can read linked to our topics.

Thank you for taking the time to read the curriculum page for year 6. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask myself or one of the other year 6 staff.
